For quite a while now, Roger Billings has been providing a free educational program called Science Live. I noticed recently that the show now has its own web site at sciencelive.com with extra downloads and past episodes sorted by category.  It is a gold mine for Roger Billings fans like this one.

Roger Billings Mentored by Bill Lear

It is still amazing to me that Roger Billings was helped to get his start from the inventor of the Lear Jet, William P. Lear or "Bill" as he was commonly known.  This photo from Roger Billings' Instagram shows the day back around 1973 when Bill Lear came to see the Model A Ford that Roger Billings had converted to run on hydrogen.  The high school project won Billings' the International Science Fair.

I recently "discovered" Roger Billings on Instagram.  I did not know he had so much on there.  There are super recent photos from some his talks as well as some old photos that I haven't found before.  I also really like some of the quote images.

Roger Billings Invited by US Army to Submit Proposal

Another blast from at the past: Back in 2011, this press release on Newswire says that US Army invited Roger Billings to submit proposal regarding "the research and development of a low latency, multi-node communication architecture based on the concept of Low Latency Networking."  From what I can tell in the announcement, it has to do with speeding up communications in military applications.  It says the technology could also be used for "cluster computing environments where the very low latency will produce significant improvements in performance of distributed or shared memory systems."

It sounds like the Army gave him a "Phase I" contract and then invited him to submit a "Phase II" contract -- I guess that means they liked what they saw in the first phase.  Sounds like neat tech.  I'll keep looking for more references on it.

Roger Billings on CybrSecurity Corporation

I noticed that Roger Billings was on the keynote panel for Defense TechConnect in Tampa, Florida last month talking about cybersecurity and his company, CybrSec (CybrSecurity Corporation).  According to the event's site, Defense TechConnect (DTC) Summit, co-located with the Fall SBIR/STTR Innovation Summit, brings together defense, private industry, federal agency, and academic leadership to accelerate state-of-the-art technology solutions for the warfighter and national security.

It looks like CybrSec was a major sponsor of the event and CybrSec's Warfighter Authentication and Secure Communication (WASC) System was a winner of the 2018 DTC Innovation Award.

I had not heard of CybrSec before so I was very interested to see their web site with a video about the system and what looks like some pretty amazing tech for Department of Defense (DoD) cybersecurity.

Roger Billings Speaks to Educators

For those of us who are hydrogen energy enthusiasts, the new Acellus Blog for Educators by Roger Billings is turning into a real treat.

The blog covers educator specific topics like new course announcements and tips for using the newer capabilities of the Acellus educator tools, but it also occasionally dives into side topics of tech, inspiration, and (you guessed it) hydrogen as a fuel.  I especially enjoyed recent posts commemorating the first hydrogen car as well as insight from Lear Jet inventor, Bill Lear.

Roger Billings' Work Called a "Game Changer"

The Kansas City Star just put out a very detailed article about Roger Billings and the Acellus Education System.  The story includes interviews with teachers and administrators at schools using Acellus in credit recovery, special education, and the general classroom.  They refer to Acellus as a "game changer" that is being used to turn potential drop-outs into high school graduates.

They interviewed administrators at Kansas City Public School District, St. Louis Public Schools, and Grain Valley School District for the story.  They also talked to teachers and students for their perspective and provided a video story in addition to the print article.  This is one of the most complete and detailed articles on Acellus that I have read.

Ok, this is pretty awesome.  I just found a new page about the "Roger Billings Mentoring Program" that includes a scholarship for Acellus Academy.

The page tells about his story -- meeting and being mentored by Bill Lear, inventor of the Lear Jet, among other things.  It says the Mentoring Program was created as as part of Roger Billings' commitment to "give back" by mentoring others.

To qualify for the scholarship, students must be in pursuit of a high school diploma, spend at least a minimum time studying each week, and have a a willing parent or guardian to supervise them.

I just love the way more and more good information is becoming freely available on the Internet.  I recently came across an archive publication of People Magazine's March 11, 1974 issue.  This just happens to be an issue that covers the work of Roger Billings.  He was a 26-year-old at the time.

Earlier, I had read that Roger Billings had been featured in People Magazine but I had never been able to find the reference until now.  This piece joins a very long list of press materials on Billings' continuing hydrogen work over the years.

Roger Billings has a Blog for Parents

Well this is new -- Roger Billings now has an Acellus Blog just for Parents.  I came across this the other day while looking at some of the news about the Acellus Learning program.  The idea here seems to be that this is the place for parents who have kids using Acellus to stay up with the latest.

Based on this blog, there appears to be a steady stream of new courses coming out, ranging from foreign language to literature.  I'm not much of an academic, but if I could do high school over again with one these courses, I might have had a chance in Spanish class.

It's been a while but I was looking around YouTube and came across a brand new posting of an excerpt from the "Science Forum" featuring none other than Roger Billings.

What an inspiring idea it is that "education is the ability to empower great minds."  With the current state of education in the United States today, we certainly can use all the help we can get.

I have covered Roger Billings' work on education in the past but, based on recent research, it looks like it has expanded a great deal in recent months.  Expect more on this future posts.

In earlier posts, I have written about the fact that Roger Billings has been a long time contributor to the field of education.  Last November, he spoke at the iNACOL Blended and Online Learning Symposium in Orlando, Florida about how Acellus Learning works. The concept of turning learning into a science in an intriguing one.

The symposium is operated by iNACOL, a nonprofit organization with the mission to 'ensure that all students have access to a world-class education and quality blended and online learning opportunities that prepare them for a lifetime of success.'  Their annual conference is billed as the industry's leading event for K-12 online, blended and competency education when administrators, educators, lawmakers, and researchers gather to discuss the field's most pressing issues.

The session by Roger Billings covers online learning, tablets, and ends with a feature on his hydrogen work that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Roger Billings Science Papers

Periodically, I look for papers by Roger Billings and rarely am I disappointed.  I have read many of his works about hydrogen energy and economy in the past -- see some of my earlier posts. 

Recently I came across a couple papers published through SPIE about another area all together: hardware-in-the-loop.  I have to admit that it went over my head pretty quick but it has to do with efforts to "reduce communication latencies, minimize redundant development, operational labor and equipment expense." One of the co-authors of the paper is with the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command. Check it out and comment with your thoughts.

About Roger Billings in Cyber Security

I have read a lot of about Dr. Billings work over the years on GoldKey security tokens and how they can be used to encrypt data but I have not heard about his work on identity federation until recently.

According to his web site, he has joined the Gold Identity initiative to help do away with the famously failed username/password technology that nearly everyone uses everyday.  We all know that it is just not very secure and we all hate coming up with new complicated passwords but how do you replace it?  What's more, even if someone creates an account with a long password, how does the web service know that they are not just some fraudster?  Well Dr. Billings and a coalition of industry experts just might have the answer.  You can read more and see some links on his page at: About Dr. Roger Billings

Roger Billings and John Wayne

One of my all-time greatest cowboy movie heroes is "The Duke" John Wayne.   I had heard that late in his life, he was also a big fan of Roger Billings' hydrogen work.  I found a photo of Roger Billings with John Wayne on Billings' web site.  It dates back to the oil embargo of 1973 era and included with it is a quote attributed to Wayne.  I can just hear him unapologetically telling it just the way he sees it.

Roger Billings Showing the First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car

Here is a short piece of news coverage on Roger Billings and his announcement of the first hydrogen fuel cell car back in 1991.  The clip, from ABC 27 News in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, shows part of the announcement event with Lieutenant Governor Mark Singel at the state capitol.  Roger Billings gives rides in the Ford Fiesta, which started as an electric vehicle donated by the US Postal Service -- watch for the steering wheel on the wrong side.  This is a neat piece of history that I was happy to find making its way onto YouTube.

Paul Harvey - A Roger Billings Fan

Until recently, I did not realize how big a fan the legendary broadcaster Paul Harvey was of Roger Billings and his hydrogen projects.

Paul Harvey (1918-2009) had one of the most recognized voices in radio history with 24 million listeners via 1,600 radio stations daily as well as numerous print publications.

I came across a few Paul Harvey articles from years ago that reveal he was not only a fan but even an investor in Roger Billings.  In one article he says:

"Billings is convinced that hydrogen pumps will appear at service stations as did gasoline 50 years ago - necessarily gradually. Government could expedite this evolution - but nothing can hold back the dawn. Innovative, imaginative Americans will do what they have to do."

Roger Billings - Dr. Hydrogen Has a New Facebook Page

Fans of Facebook will be pleased to know that Roger Billings recently released a new Facebook page about his hydrogen work titled "Roger Billings - Dr. Hydrogen".  It features some posts of his earlier hydrogen cars and mentions new announcements from major automakers.  Hydrogen is indeed heating up fast!
